Convincing Provo it is illegal to set a mouse trap without a hunting license

Dear Mr. Mayor,
It has recently come to my attention that in California it is illegal to set a mouse trap without a hunting license. Currently if one lives in Provo they can set a mouse trap without any kind of license. I believe that Provo absolutely must follow the example of California and implement a similar law. Hunting licenses are issued so that the population of animals can be kept under control, without said populations becoming extinct. If Provo does not implement a law prohibiting citizens from setting mouse traps in order to slaughter innocent mice, the mouse population in Provo will diminish, and may very well disappear entirely. This would have a detrimental effect on the ecosystem of Provo, affecting not only the other animals, but eventually people in Provo as well. Mice are an essential part of our ecosystem for many reasons. First of all the mice can provide an essential part of trash management by eating waste products so commonly disposed by the population of Provo. Also mice provide an essential source of food for other animals found in our beloved city. Also, mouse traps can be very dangerous to those who set them, and also to those who may stumble across the traps unawares; therefore, if one wishes to set a mouse trap they should be properly certified, and have a license to prove their certification.

Jumpers In Provo

Dear Mayor,

It has come to my attention that there is no law penalizing those who jump off of buildings. This is a serious issue. If we allow individuals to jump off buildings willy nilly then the fabric of our entire society will be unraveled. In New York, the penalty for jumping off a building is death. I propose the implementation of this law in Provo. Please acquiesce to my request. Just imagine strolling through University Mall with your family when all of a sudden you see someone jump off a building! How graphic of an experience do you want your children to witness? And who is going to clean up the mess? I am begging you do not allow people to jump off of buildings.

Convincing Provo of Mouse Traps

Dear Mayor,

I think it's time that innocent mice stop getting killed by people who don't have a hunting license. Setting mouse traps is dangerous and it would be wise to only have those who have been trained to set mouse traps. As mayor of Provo it is your responsibility to step up and act! You need to make and enforce the law of only those with a hunting license being able to set these traps. The time is now and I'm am looking towards you to make this happen. Provo would be a better place if you did this. I'm counting on you to make a difference!

Dear Provo Mayor,

As you know, deceiving someone is a very serious matter. Perhaps you are lead to believe a product can magically regrow your baldspot. We know that you have had this problem since freshman year of highschool so if you were to use this product with your hopes high, only find out that the product was indeed a fraud, you would be extremely angry. Therefore if you found a dollar on the ground only to find out that it was somebody pulling a practical joke, you might not feel so humorous towards the situation. What if you really needed that dollar to buy a candy bar you have been craving all day. I submit that deceiving someone, and more pulling practical joke with sound conscious mind, can seriously demoralize them into in becoming revengeful and reckless.

We must now ban pulling dollars on strings for the mere cruel enjoyment of others. Please make this law. Thank you.

Fire Hydrants Must Be Checked Before Fires

Dear Provo Mayor,

In Danville, Pennsylvania, all fire hydrants must be checked one hour before all fires. This should be enforced in Provo. If we checked the fires one hour before a fire started, we would be able to put out the fire faster. We would be able to save houses and protect the people sleeping, playing, or just watching television. It is outrageous that this already is not a law. We should care more about our city and protect them by checking the fire hydrants before the fire starts. We are losing to many houses and people are dying because we are not doing this.

Dollar Bill Trickery

To whom it may concern:
I believe that we should implement the law that it is prohibited to attach a dollar bill to a string and trick a person into trying and pick it up. Not only is it utterly embarrassing and mortifying, it also is an example of the immaturity in today's society. In today's world it is emphasized that being youthful should be a priority in one's life. This is not an excuse to act immature and to use trickery to entertain yourself and other friends. If adults are playing these silly games, they will influence the younger generation. Therefore, affecting generations for years and years to come and teaching them to trick others for entertainment. Some people can't help the fact that they don't have common sense, or that they are simply brainless. It is the height of rudeness to snicker at others for something they can't control, their curiosity. Why is there a dollar bill on the ground? And why is it moving steadily away from me? How is this dollar bill moving itself? Are some of the questions that come to mind of the victim while they mindlessly follow the dollar bill on the ground. Please implement this law to prevent embarrassment of helpless victims in the future.

Convincing Provo of the Massachusetts Law

We need to implement the law in Massachusetts now! I really think it is just common courtesy to be clean when going to bed, especially if you will be cuddling with someone throughout the night. Most english students work up such a sweat throughout the day by constantly and diligently revising their opinion editorials, that naturally the begin to smell. So, consequently we should push for a law to enforce good hygiene.

I cannot believe the laws of Provo allow the killing of mice. Mice are creatures too. Dogs have rights; cats have rights. Why cant mice have rights? This is totally unfair and as mayor of this great town you should resolve this crisis! You must act now! Change the laws so that you must have a hunting license to kill mice. If you don't do this thousands of innocent mice will be killed daily! This blood will be on your hands if you don't change the law!

Exciting-but-not-really response to the Mayor

Dearest, honorable, and most high Mayor,

I have recently discovered an interesting fact, you honor. In Pennsylvania, it’s against the law to tie a dollar bill on a string on the ground and pull it away when someone tries to pick it up. Now this may seem silly to you, but it's not. I am endeavoring to convince you, not only of this law's utmost seriousness, but that Provo city needs to implement a similar law. I live in Orem city, and silly things like tying a dollar bill on a string and pulling it away when a recovery is attempted simply do not happen. We are above such base and vulgar shenanigans. In Provo however, this is a rampant problem. Just the other day in fact, I was walking down the road and saw a dollar bill, just lying there, screaming at me to be recovered. I bent down, intending to retrieve the lone currency note, and it jumped! I was aghast! A completely inanimate object moved by itself! Was there wind? No, the air currents were keeping to themselves that day. Was I hallucinating? Of course not! I have been completely LSD-free for at least a week. I still don't have the dollar, do I? That leaves just a single option. A nearby horrible scoundrel must have tied a string to the bill and pulled it away as I tried to pick it up! THIS MUST BE MADE ILLEGAL! Punishable by 259 years in prison, if not immediate death.
Please help our city to plug this gross hole in the law.

Convincing Provo

Dear Provo Mayor,
I would just like to express my outrage that in the fine city of Provo we do not have a law that requires the citizens to bathe before going to bed for the night. I am so appalled that such an important issue has not been addressed and taken care of yet. Taking a bath before bed is one of the most important things that we need to be doing. If this law in not make soon we could have a big problem on our hands. Provo will start to smell because of all these people thinking it is not important to take a bath before bed. The smell will start to consume the city and pretty soon reach to other cities. We need act quick and make sure these stinky people don't let their stench effect those of us who take personal hygiene as a top priority. Those who bathe before bed should not have to deal with those who do not. There is only so much smell we can take. Please take our noses into consideration and implement this law to the city of Provo. Thank you for your time.
Dear Mayor of Provo,
I have have had some grave experiences involving dollar bills and young children. They constantly trick me with their fishing lines and dollar bills. I want those trickster children to be thrown in jail! Too many times have i bent down to pick up a dollar bill only for it to be yanked away. My back aches and my wallet is thin; I sure dislike those pranksters. We must enact strict punishment. Anything short of capital punishment is too mild. No one will respect you unless you enact this law.

I am disgusted by the way that mice are treated in this town. Mice have rights, and we must be willing to respect those. How could any humane person ever put out a mouse trap without the proper licensing. What would influence a person to take the life of another living creature without first getting a permit from the city. Everyone must first buy a tag to hunt a mouse. If this is not done, we will find very rapid depopulation of mice city wide. We can stand for this no longer. Mice must be treated fairly.

Imagine if you were a four inches tall. Innocent and defenseless. All alone in this world looking for a scrap of cheese, but everywhere you turn people are trying to kill you. You wouldn't last long. Convincing Provo of Mandatory Baths

Dear Mayor,
I would like to propose that we make a new law. I think that we should make it illegal to go to bed at night without having taken a bath. This would solve all kinds of problems. People would smell so much better and it would be much easier to contain sickness and disease. This law is one that should be enforced immediately. With the flu season upon us, we need to take drastic actions in order to prevent an epidemic. We learn from elementary school on up that it's important to take baths. But it seems that some people still don't. These non-bathers are a danger, because they have bad hygiene and are much more likely to spread germs than those who bathe. Let's make this a law today and we will all benefit.

Convincing Provo: "Licinse to Kill" Mice

Dear Honorable Mayor of Provo,
With the oncoming winter, I feel it important to address the rights of mice around the city. With the soon ensuing winter and snowfall, many of the city's mice population will seek refuge in homes, barns and shacks of local citizens. The problem is that these mice do not find a very welcome refuge. Traps, are weapons and while it is alright to have them, citizens should take a class about mouse appreciation and obtain a license before they kill. When killing other animals, we need to obtain a license and mice should have the same rights as other animals. I urge the city to think more considerately about our scurrying friends. Thank you

If you desire to be re-elected, I highly suggest that you take heed in implementing a new law. In California a private citizen cannot set a mouse trap without a hunting license. This law will not only prevent inhumane behaviors but it will make the citizens more responsible. Mice also need protection. How can you sleep at night when mouse traps are set without authority? I find it appalling that you are taking no action concerning this law. To save your office seat, I urge you to start using compassion to every living thing.

In Califoria it is against the law to set a mouse trap with out a hunting license. I beleive that we need to implement this law in Provo because it is an extremely good law. Mouse traps are very dangerous and should only be set by those that have a hunting license. By having a hunting license, you know what you are doing and are responsible enough to realize how dangerous it is. If a young child tried to set a mouse trap they could hurt themselves very badly. Also, you have to pay for a hunting license, so the people who buy them are very serious about what they are doing. As you can see, this is a very good law and should be put into action immediately.

Convincing of Provo E.T. dolls

I think that we should implement a law to ban all E.T. dolls from being sold here in Provo. We don't need alien faces covering Provo. We are humans and want to interact with humans. By selling alien dolls, we are supporting interaction with aliens and we don't want that. It is a bad concept whether they are real or not. If they are real, we want to keep human beings away from harm and to be in the mind set of not trusting people from other worlds. If they aren't true, we are just learning to live in a fake world that sells things that aren't real. Another reason is that who are we to try to mimic another creation of God. We don't know what aliens look like. They probably look like us and we are making them look ugly. Most aliens that we make are green with big eyes. They look weird and gross. Nobody has the right to make fun of E.T's and how they look and what they are like. Let's remember that we aren't anybody important to judge these aliens. Provo should unite in banning alien dolls. Aliens are not to be made fun of.

Feedback

I like feedback to my work to be completely critical because anything lighter than a pure criticism of my work I believe is being unnecesarily polite. If my viewpoints are weak then I would like to be made aware of this. If my reasoning is awkward then it’s fine if I am told. I really believe that I cannot become a better writer if people are too worried are about telling me the truth about my writing. Therefore, I would like for my feedback to be extremely honest and truthful. I think it is my goal to become a harsh and poignant writer, because he with the most extreme, but well written writing, is the person that is most remembered in his critics reviews.

My not-quite-as-killer response to the second, more boring, prompt...

I like feedback to my work to be convincingly positive. I'm going to be honest - when it comes to writing, I really just don't like hearing that I'm not doing a great job. Sure, it would be a great thing for me to say that "I love it when people are brutally honest." That, however, is simply a blatant falsehood. If you're going to try to be helpful, be sure to explain why the heck you think you know any better than I do. If you've built up some 'legit street cred' when it comes to writing, I'll probably respect your opinion. Otherwise, I'll most likely just hate on you for being a hater, and ignore whatever you say.

So baby me. Tell me I'm special. Tell me that everything is going to be alright. Then, and only then, we can be friends. Besties even. I like feedback to my work to be honest. If someone does not give honest feedback to my work they may as well not give any feedback at all. I won’t know how to fix my work if everyone always tells me it is “great.” At the same time I also appreciate civil feedback. Criticism of my work is good; however, constructive criticism is better.

I like feedback to my work to be constructive criticism. I like it a lot when people criticize my work so that I can improve the parts that are weak or poorly written. Although I might think that it was better before the critique, it helps to see the viewpoint of other people. I always am looking to improve my work, and I personally think that this is the best way for it to happen.

I like feedback to my work to be relevant and on time. One thing that I really don’t like is when a teacher doesn't mark my paper at all, but gives me what seems to be a very arbitrary grade. It is hard to change things when you get B, and you have no idea what the teacher actually thought about your paper. I like feedback to my work to be informative. That's a pretty broad term, so I'll try and make it a bit more specific for you.
When someone gives me feedback for something I've done, it feels good to have them say wonderful flattering things about it, but it's not that informative. I like to hear good things, but I also like to hear things that will make my project better.

I like feedback to my work to be concise and pertinent to what I can do to improve the overall persuasiveness of the paper. I feel that I benefit greatly when I receive feedback that is straightforward and to-the-point. Because those who are giving the feedback are generally those who I am writing to, I appreciate feedback that analyzes the strength of my argument and the validity of my statements. I also value knowing whether or not my argument is relating to the audience on an a personable, emotional, and credible level.

I like feedback for my work to be constructive but not protective. The reason for feedback is in order to help people improve and I do not like when people feel like they can not say anything negative without hurting my feelings. At the same time, you do not want to have all negative things to say about another persons work. It is tricky sometimes, but with the proper care, feedback can be used to help people improve. The most important thing about feedback is that you are giving it to help the other person, not to hurt them or satisfy your own pride.

I like feedback to my work to be targeted on what I can specifically add or subtract from my work to make it better. I also like to know why adding or subtracting something to my work will make it stronger. I like hearing what I can do to specifically make my paper more powerful to a reader. However, I want to know why (ethos, pathos, logos) making certain changes to my paper will make it a better paper. I want to know the "whys" of correcting my work so that I can learn to do better on my own in the future.

I like feedback to my work to be... honest and helpful. I want constructive criticism that will help me improve my writing skills, make what I am writing stronger and make me a better writer overall. I want tips that I can use and suggestions to make it better.

I would like feedback to my work to be specific. Smiley faces and stars are nice to see but it gives me no direction of improvement. If feedback is to be given then it should include comments on strengths and weaknesses of my work. Mistakes of grammar and spelling should be taken into account on the final grade but feedback does not need to be wasted on the these skills.

thoughtful, creative, and something that can actually help me. In my high school the peer-editing was a total joke. Nobody wanted to hurt anyone elses feelings or criticize their writing skills so they just edited the grammer and said "good work!" or something like that. I think it would be great though if the feedback that I recieve here is something that I can really use. I think it is most productive when it is specific and to the point. So I can realize mistakes that I make and go back and change them.

In the end, I just want a good grade so I want to know all of that information so that on my final draft I can perfect it.

I like my feedback to be very blunt. I don't like it when it's sugar coated. I also don't like when it says, "this was really good but....." if it was really good there wouldn't be a but right? Just tell me what you want to say and what you're really thinking. It helps both of us out. Also I don't like it when you say half of what you're trying to tell me and want me to figure the rest out. I don't know what you're thinking or how you want it written! The best is when feedback is clear, precise and critiqued well. I'm not going to be offended if there's a lot of feedback for me. It helps me to write better, and in the end have a well written paper.

Intellectual History

Throughout my life, education has been especially meaningful in my life. As a young child I looked up to well educated people within my family, and desired the same knowledge and understanding that they had gained through years of earthly experience. While still young I enjoyed studying about history, in particular, and excelled in mathematics. I especially loved studying about the Civil War and sometimes surprised my father, a history teacher, with the knowledge I had gained about that war. I loved to learn new things and strove to get all I could out of elementary school. From an early age I had the desire and set the goal to attend BYU and excel in my academics. Recently I have decided to focus my studies on business and am excited to learn all I can. Though my desires for high achievement have always been very real, many times throughout my academic career I have been distracted by the trivial and unimportant things which have led me to under perform in the areas of lasting import to myself. The greatest of my problems, leading through high school and up into college, was that of procrastination. Procrastination, a word I particularly despise and a word I hear with disdain. One word that describes a poor habit that leads to regrets, and like sin, leads literally to pain and disappointment. Many times I have disappointed myself and others because I just did not manage my time properly and let slip by precious opportunities to learn. Since returning from my mission I have come to see the importance of, "not procrastinating" the day of our repentance. Time management has become extremely important in my life. If I do not take control of my life others will. Habits form who we are and what we become. Man is a creature of habit and habits have the same ability to propel us to reach our goals, or to strangle the time and opportunities that we have. Thus my goal for this semester is to make it habit to plan my weekly and daily schedule, focusing on those things that are most important to my life. As I cultivate this habit daily, it will force me to remember my goals and aspirations. I must capture every opportunity that I have and strive to make every day worth while.

Intellectual History

(a) My most influential teachers I have ever had in Church, school, the workplace, etc., have been the ones who have led me by example. Now I do not mean to disregard the importance of the 'practical' lessons that I was taught in those environments, but considering those lessons that led me to transform or mature in a way so that I could live a life in greater accordance with true and correct principles, have mostly occurred through the form of that individual's example. It seems to me, that the most influence a person can possibly have, stems directly from the strength, integrity, and true nature/character of that person. If a person's character is weak or flawed in some aspect of what they are trying to reflect or teach to their students, then the lesson itself loses some of that influence, that profoundness. I think that is why Christ was such an influential teacher because everything He taught stemmed from a perfect character. There was nothing that Christ taught that He did not do himself. The same goes for those individuals who have influenced me the most. My father taught me the value of self discipline and hard work and exemplified that by working three jobs when he was furloughed through American Airlines. My mother taught me to be compassionate and to see others for who they really are and exemplified that through volunteering for years at homeless shelters and other charitable organizations. The list goes on... Socrates said, "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then, is not an act, but a habit." It is my personal experience that has led me to realize that the most influence we can have on others must first stem from a strong, balanced individual practicing those very principles taught to others.
(b) Something I am trying to become better at, is managing my time more efficiently. I once read in Covey's, 7 Habits For Highly Effective People, that 'if you fail to plan, you plan to fail.' I have noticed that if I take just a small amount of time out of each day to reassess what I am doing for that day and how it is contributing to my goals, I have more effective and productive days. The hard part is just staying consistent every day.
a) I have always had an affinity toward government and history. I excelled in these classes more than others as I grew up. As I returned from my mission I decided to try some different things to see if there was something else that would be better. I decided to do dentistry and to do a science major. I soon realized that this wasn’t for me. Changing my major was hard, but I have now chosen to be a History major. I feel like this is a better option for me because I am more competitive within the History major. I had a very good AP English and Government teacher that really pushed me. They both helped e develop an appreciation for the subject matter. They were the teachers that prepared me the best for school at the university level. When I was about to go into the 9th grade, my dad pulled me aside and said that I should really focus on school and that the grades I received then would determine the rest of my life. I took that seriously and since then I have tried to do well in school

b) The goal that I have learned the most about recently is time management. As a returned from my mission things were a lot easier because nothing was quite as time intensive as my mission was. As I began school I noticed that I wasted a lot of time because I felt like I had a lot of time to do what needed to be done. I have recently started using Google calendar which has really been helpful. It is simple to use and is an amazing tool for time management. At the beginning of the semester I enter in all of my syllabi and it allows me to see what I have in my classes all together and allows me to plan very well for future assignments and exams.

Intellectual History

My intellectual history... That's a pretty broad topic! I guess the first interesting thing is that I started formal school when I was 4. I used to live in Ireland, and students over there start full, 6-hour a day, school when their 4 years old. So I learned to read really really early. After 2 years in Ireland, we moved back to the States and I started first grade.
Nothing of note happened during my entire elementary education.
Wow, that's a sad statement... Oh well.
When I got to junior high and High school, I started finding more what I like. I fell into technical theatre and have loved it ever since. I learned all sorts of things about technical theatre, both in class and in practical applications. One of my most influential teachers was actually my high school tech teacher. He is an amazing teacher and has done tech for many, many years. He helped me to understand how to work effectively with other people, both as a supervisor and a subordinate, as well as how to manage time on a very messed up schedule.

I need a plan to carry out one of the Richard Light goals. I picked the 5th one one the list, "A very important thing for a student to learn is time management."
Let me just say that I have horrible time management. Last night I stayed up til 5:30 in the morning working on something that really doesn't matter. When I get home from school, I know I need to do homework, but I just ignore it in favor of other, more exciting things. I need to learn to take time and specifically set it aside for homework.

My intellectual history is vast and impressive. I'm only kidding - well, half kidding anyway - but I am, however, going to take this wonderful opportunity to share a bit about myself, and about where I'm coming from when you hear me say things or while reading what I write.
As a youngster, I always loved to take things apart to figure out how they work. I never really got around the part where most people would typically put those things back together, but I enjoyed the whole idea nonetheless. This may have been the beginning of my life as an incurably hopeless nerd.
Unlike most other nerds you may have met, I'm not actually very smart - I just like to pretend that I am. As I grew up, I continued this amazing act, seeking out any opportunity to learn about gadgets, gizmos, whatsits, and shiny things. When I got to BYU, I decided to try my hand at a few of the more technical courses offered on campus. As it turns out, I ended up doing pretty well in these classes despite my glaring lack of intelligence. In the first semester after my mission, I jumped back and forth between a few different majors, including Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, and Computer Engineering, but ended up settling - at least for now - into the Information Technology (IT) major.

I've tried in the past to set goals to the effect of being more effective with my time - those all failed pretty miserably. So, because of this, I've decided to set a new goal: to be more effective with my time. I know what you might be thinking. You're saying, "but Dave, that's the same goal!" If this is indeed what you're saying, then you are, in fact, correct.
This time around, however, I am going to accomplish my goal. Why? Well, because I want to. In all seriousness though, I have a good plan that should lead to better accomplishing this goal. This plan includes what might be the biggest obstacle for me; going to bed early. So far, after a week, I've found that this isn't really all that hard to do, since I'm usually exhausted by around 11:00PM anyway. I must be getting old. I think it'll be easier to go to bed earlier this semester because I've moved out on my own, and am no longer living with my close friends. Since they live down the street, and not in my apartment, It's easier to break away and just go to bed. That's pretty much the plan so far. I'll be sure to keep you all posted on how that's going, since I know you're all on the very edge of your seats.

I loved reading in grade school. Sometimes I would read encyclopedias hoping that I would learn something useful. I grew out of that phase and probably slacked off a bit too much throughout junior high and high school. However, some teachers still left an imprint on me. My favorite high school teacher was Russ Mayo. I spent more time in Russ' class cooking hamburgers and hot dogs than learning about video editing, which is what he was supposed to teach us. I can now cook a perfect hamburger with so little smoke that our fire was undetectable to anyone else on campus.

My goal for college is to not get bogged down with homework because of procrastination. I know it sounds trite but I really need to work on this and I promise I'll change this time... I have a plan. Right after I get done with my classes for the day I'm going to do my homework. What a novel idea! I'm pretty sure it will work because I've been told since I was a small child that I'm supposed to do my homework before I have fun. Its amazing that it takes me years and years to learn the same simple lesson.
a) I have had many choices that led me to where I am in my life. While in middle school, we had a career day that many parents came and discussed their professions. I really enjoyed one of the parents displays on heart surgery. For some reason, I have always had a fascination for the heart and the way that it functions. I have a family member who was a heart surgeon, so it has kind of motivated to become one. In high school, I mainly liked gym classes and just whichever classes that I had a lot of friends. I enjoy participating or just merely watching sports such as the following: soccer, basketball, football, and volleyball. Many of my coaches and teachers have inspired me to keep on trying and striving to achieve my potential in life.

b) I have many goals that I would like to accomplish and improve. I really have a desire to improve on my habit of procrastination. I tend to leave assignments and studying to the last possible moment. Although I manage to get all of my assignments done, I would like to improve so that I do not stress out as much as I tend to do. Also, I plan on having a better study technique throughout this semester so that I will be ready for my final exams and not have to cram everything to the last minute. I desire on getting better grades so that I will be able to achieve my goal of making into medical school. I know that by accomplishing just these little goals I will become a better student and achieve many things that will help me in my life.

I chose my Humanities major because i love to study art and music, but i am currently looking in psychology as an alternative major. I took a marriage and family class last semester which had a psychology aspect to it which got me interested in the major. I am also pursuing a ballroom dance minor and a music minor with an emphasis on vocal performance. I love my AP English class my junior year because my class read a variety of old and new books, then we discussed them as a class and bounced ideas off of each other. This is also one of the only english classes that has helped me to improve my writing skills. Mrs. Lofquist, my AP English 11 teacher, was one of my most influential teachers because she would pull each student aside to tell them what they were doing well in their essays, and what needed to be improved. She told the students upfront what they needed to work on instead of beating around the bush. My parents have always taught my younger brothers and I to do well academically as well as improving our talents that we used in extracurriculars. Whether that be dance, piano, singing, sports, student council, also planning and leading mutual activities.
The Richard Light goal that i want to work on is to better my time management skills. To be able to balance school, homework, dance, and choir as well as looking to obtain a job. To meet this goal I have bought a planner and I am constantly writing down To-Do lists for myself. I need to set myself a bedtime, however childish that is, and keep to it no matter what. I also need to make sure i stay healthy by eating the right foods and staying physically active so that I can have the strength to keep up with my hectic schedule.

If you had asked me 5 years ago the "what do you want to do when you grow up?" question, I probably would have said that I wanted to play for the Portland Trail Blazers in the NBA. But after entering high school and experiencing a little reality check I started to think seriously about what I wanted to be. Our high school didn't offer many specialized classes, so I didn't have the chance to explore my options as much as I wanted to. However, since my Dad is an accountant and a graduate from the Mariott School here at BYU I decided to put Business down as my Major, rather than come here undecided. Since arriving here at BYU I have only affirmed that decision . During Freshman Orientation I had the opportunity to tour the Tanner Building and hear about all of the options there are and I have found it to be very interesting. So I plan on majoring in Business Management with and Emphasis in finance.
My goal for this year is to keep an organized weekly planner, and to always stay right with my school work...never too far behind, never too far ahead (if that's possible). I think that if I do that I will have the least amount of stress about schoolwork and allow myself time to have fun as well.

When i was in third grade, i decided what i wanted to do when i grew up. My teacher that year, Mrs. Mayer, was the first adult that i ever connected with. She opened my eyes to the world of education and taught me how enjoy learning. Since then, i have always wanted to major in elementary education. Throughout high school, i took many classes that would challenge and help me to become a better student and teacher. I took a class in high school called Child Practicum, where i worked with first graders every other day. This was my favorite class and assured me that i definently wanted to be an elementary school teacher when i grew up. My favortite teacher in high school was my IB Biology teacher, Dr. Harris. She took time away every morning to go over the material with me that we learned the day before. She showed me how science can be interesting and very fun and helped me learn how to love science.

As i started college, i knew the only to succeed was to stay organized. Every morning when i wake up, i make a to do list for the day. I post what classes i have and what homework i need to do for that day. I use my planner in class to write down what i need to do for that class, and transfer it to my to do list when i get home to ensure that it gets done. With this list, i make sure to do it before i go out and "play". By doing this, i can make sure that i get everything done for the day. Then i can enjoy myself when i go out and play.

The necessity of an education has always been stressed throughout my life. On my first day of kindergarten my parents warned me that if I didn't get good grades I wouldn't make it to college. The foundation that my parents laid that day has affected my life greatly. As I gained more secular knowledge of the world, I learned more about myself. My likes and dislikes, strengths and weaknesses, and most importantly the benefits of a good work ethic. During high school I discovered that I am skilled with history and reading, but what truly fascinates me are life sciences, which is why I have chosen Physiology and Developmental Biology as my major. My favorite teacher in high school was named Mrs. Adamson and she instilled in me a passion for medicine.
Also, throughout high school I was heavily involved in service and decided that whatever career I chose it would affect the people around me. My goal this semester is to learn how to appropriately manage my time so that I may be successful in my pursuit of medicine

Out of all the classes I took in high school Sports Medicine, Sociology, Interior Design and English were by far my favorites. My English teacher was very influential to me because she encouraged us to take risks, do things we wouldn't normally do, and get outside our comfort zone. One lesson that she taught us had the greatest impact on me and that was to live life to the fullest because we can never go back a do out life over again.
My senior year I took a Medical Assisting class at Mountainland Applied Technology College where I got my Medical Assisting degree. This class was a lot of hard work. I went everyday for three hours and after I was done I had to do a 180 hour internship. After I finally finished it I worked at a Doctor's office and I learned so much there. Some of the things I did were shots, blood draws, assisting with stitches, heart monitors, breathing treatments, taking x-rays, applying casts, flu, strep, and mono tests, and lots of other things. Since taking that class and working there this had become a passion of mine. I love helping people and making them feel better. I have known for a long time that I want to be a nurse but this class ultimately helped me decided that.

For my Richard Light goal I chose time management because that is definitely something I need to work on. Before school started I bought a planner and so far it has helped to keep me organized with my classes and everything. A couple things I need to work on are getting to bed earlier, and make sure I set aside time to do my homework instead of other things that aren't as important.

Growing up in my family, we were always taught to work hard and do whatever was asked of us. Although I grew up in a household where my mom did all the chores and we didn't really do that much around the house like reconstruction, working on the car, etc, we still knew that when we got on our own, we would have to do something. I found that when I got out on my own I started cleaning and fixing things. I also realized that learning by actually doing, in this case, wasn't necessary for me to learn effectively. So in my opinion, that was the most important lesson I learned from my parents growing up. Let kids be kids, but when it comes to getting older, you are responsible for getting things done.
My goal this semester is to start exercising and try to find some other extra curricular activities to do. I get too stressed and burnt out when I focus purely on homework. My goal is to start running everyday. With that, find something everyday that I look forward to(ex: a tv show, ward activity, going to the temple, etc) so that I always have some sort of daily fun and relaxation. I have found that although I may be more tired and have less time, I will be happier and plan my time more effectively rather than letting myself have time to procrastinate. So in conclusion, I need to be more involved in other things rather than school to clear my mind to be able to work and learn more effectively.

"When I was, a young boy, my father, took me into the city, to see a marching band..." OK so not really, but when I was younger my dad did teach me the importance of knowing how to work, and the importance of obtaining a good education. Most of the time my parents taught me these principles at the same time by having me do something such as dig a seemingly endless number of holes for various trees, weed numerous flowerbeds, and a number of other tasks involving manual labor. I hated most of these “character building experiences” which my parents made me endure; however, in hindsight I am grateful that my parents made me do these various tasks because it has motivated me to strive to excel in my education. In high school I enjoyed several of my classes including my Calculus class and my English class. I currently am majoring in Computer Science. I chose this major because I enjoy working with computers, and because various articles that I have read state that there will be a demand in the future for those with degrees in Computer Science.

The “Richard Light goal” that I plan on carrying out is to make better use of the advisement available to me. In almost every class in which I am enrolled the professors and the aides encourage those who need help to come to them with any questions they may have. Previously I have not used this resource very much; however, this semester I will try to seek help when I fail to understand a concept or when I just need something clarified. Overall, by the end of this semester I hope to be more comfortable approaching the professors and aides in my classes in seeking further knowledge, and then applying that knowledge in a beneficial way.

One class that I really enjoyed while I was in high school was English. I had a great teacher who really pushed me to do my best work and it helped me progress a lot. It seemed like he was always asking me to do more than I thought I could, so in the end when I found out that I could accomplish all that was asked, it helped me believe in my abilities. It was partly because of this teacher and my experience in his class that I am thinking about majoring in Print Journalism. My teacher helped me become a better writer, which in turn made me enjoy writing a lot more than I used to.

This semester I've made the goal of being more organized and having better time management. I haven't ever really used a planner before, so I decided that it was time to get one and use it this semester. I plan on writing little notes in my planner as I go throughout my day, so that I can keep track of what homework I have to do. Then at the end of the day I will use my planner as I complete my assignments to make sure I get everything done that I need to. Hopefully, this will help me keep track of all my assignments and keep me from forgetting to do things.

My Intellect

I've been around for forever! Literally. My intelligence has existed for forever! However, for purposes of this assignment I will skip past my birth and into my early days as an elementary school student. As a "Knowlton Colt" (in Kaysville Utah) I learned some extremely important things about myself. First, I learned to like girls; second, I hated spelling. After this important discovery I was ready for Kaysville Jr. High. At this institution I was able to learn the beauty of Math, Music, and Science. By the time I entered Davis High I had decided that I really didn't like English very much, probably due in part to my repressed childhood fear of spelling. So I delved into chemistry, calculus, physics, and anything else that could potentially label me as a complete nerd. I took about 6 AP classes and about 7 AP tests including: US History, Statistics, Calculus BC and Micro/Macro Economics. Obviously, I love to learn and I love to stretch myself to my limits. But above all, greater than my love of chess and pocket-protectors (I hope you know I'm joking), I love to be around people. In my opinion education and learning is a gateway to communicating with those I love, and I love just about everybody. Education enhances your ability to share your inner soul with those you love and to help and guide them if necessary. It is, therefore, crucial and pivotal. Hence, I love to learn.

Part B

I intend to get the most out of my time at BYU as I can. I will optimize my education and fulfill what is expected of me and more. So, one way I am going to increase my personal chance at excelling at BYU is to take advantage of my professors and T.A.'s along with the labs here at BYU. I will make sure that I never continue to be confused in a subject I am studying if I have the opportunity to go somewhere and get personal help. I will do my best, always.

A. In high school I took a geometry math class. For one of the assignments we had to take a 4x6 picture and replicate it x 4. I took a picture of my brother and sister and decided to do a charcoal drawing. It turned out really well and since then I have been interested in all kinds of Art. I'm applying to the Visual Arts program in January and hopefully that will be my major. In high school I also loved my Medical Principles classes and Physiology. I love medicine and wanted to be a nurse or neuroscientist and do research. English is my hardest subject and I have always struggled with writing, though I do love reading. My first grade teacher Mrs. McKinney has been my most influential teacher. She told me I could do anything I wanted and pushed me to try harder through all my years of schooling. My parents have always been very school oriented and anything less than an 'A' is not acceptable. Hard work and dedicated study have always been expected in my family and hopefully I have picked up on some of these habits.


B. The goal I chose to work on is time management. After having all summer off it has definitely been an adjustment to get back into the habit of having a schedule and making sacrifices to get things done. One of the things I have decided to do is get to bed before midnight on school nights. Even with in the past week I have had to push myself to get things done so I could go to bed on time, and it has made a difference. I’ve also had to learn how to tell people no and not feel guilty about it. Having work at 8 every morning and school right after it’s important for me to keep track of things and be organized. Having a planner has helped with this and it’s nice to have everything written down in one place.
